Manage Chat History

Your chat history appears in the left sidebar. Writingmate groups chats by their latest activity under Pinned, Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, and Older than last month.

Chats assigned to a project appear inside that project instead of the main history list. See Sidebar Navigation for the full sidebar layout.

Search chats

Select Search in the sidebar, or press Command+K on macOS or Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux. Search can match chat titles and message content. It can also find saved prompts.

Use the tabs at the top of Search to narrow the results:

  • All shows chats, prompts, and the New chat action.
  • Chats shows chat results and the New chat action.
  • Prompts shows saved prompts.

See Using Keyboard Shortcuts for related shortcuts.

Open the chat menu

Move the pointer over a chat in the sidebar and open its three-dot menu. The menu contains the actions below.

Pin or unpin

Select Pin to move a chat into the Pinned group. Open the menu again and select Unpin to return it to the date-based groups.

Rename

Select Rename, enter a non-empty name, and save it. A specific title makes the chat easier to find later.

Share

New chats are Private by default. In Share, choose:

  • Private: only you can access the chat.
  • Public: anyone with the chat link can access it.

Review the full conversation and any included files or personal information before choosing Public. Change the chat back to Private when it should no longer be available through its link. See Sharing a Chat.

Move to project

If you have projects, select Move to project, then choose the destination. The chat leaves the main history list and appears inside that project. Moving a chat does not delete it.

Export

Select Export, then choose one of the available download formats:

  • Markdown (.md) for a readable text document
  • JSON (.json) for structured message data
  • CSV (.csv) for a table of messages

Exports can contain message text, timestamps, model names, and attachment paths. Store exported files securely and review them before sending them to someone else.

Delete

Select Delete, then confirm the warning. Deletion is permanent and removes the chat from Writingmate. If you delete the chat you are currently viewing, Writingmate returns you to the chat home.

Before sharing a screenshot or screen recording, hide the sidebar or remove private workspace, project, and chat names. Chat titles can reveal confidential work even when the messages are not visible.
