Overview of Agents

An Agent is a saved AI assistant for a repeated task. It combines one selected model with your instructions and can also include knowledge files, tools, integrations, and conversation starters.

Open Agents from the sidebar to create an Agent or start a chat with one that is already available.

Browse and use Agents

The Agents page groups cards into two sections when both are available:

  • Your Agents contains Agents you created. Each card has Chat and Edit actions.
  • Explore agents created for you contains ready-made Agents maintained by Writingmate. Select Chat on a card to start a new conversation with its saved configuration.

The ready-made catalog can change as Agents are added, updated, or removed. The current Agents page does not have a separate Agent search field. Search in the main sidebar searches chats and prompts, not Agent cards.

You must sign in to chat with an Agent or create your own. Model access and message limits still depend on your Writingmate plan.

Create a saved Agent

Select Add Agent in the page header. If no Agents are available yet, select Create Your First Agent. Both actions open Add New Agent.

The form includes:

  • Generate Icon or an uploaded image for the Agent card
  • Name for the card and chat header
  • Model for this Agent's conversations
  • Description to explain the Agent's purpose
  • Instructions to define its behavior, task, and boundaries
  • Temperature to adjust how precise or varied responses should be
  • Context Length to set how much conversation and reference content the selected model can use
  • Knowledge Files for documents the Agent should use as reference
  • Agent Integrations for available tools
  • Conversation Starters for example tasks shown at the start of a chat

Name, Model, Description, and Instructions are required. The Improve action beside Description and Instructions can rewrite existing text. Review the result before saving it.

Select Create Agent to save the configuration. The new card appears under Your Agents.

For detailed setup advice, see Creating Custom Agents and Selecting and Configuring Agents.

Knowledge files

Use Upload Files under Knowledge Files to add reference material. Files upload and process as part of the Agent's knowledge base. The form shows whether each upload is still in progress, succeeded, or failed.

File type and size rules apply. A file that is available in another chat is not automatically available to the Agent; add it to this Agent's Knowledge Files first. See Uploading and Managing Files.

Tools and integrations

Open Agent Integrations to choose from the tools available to your account. Depending on the current configuration, sections can include Core Integrations, Canvas, Image Generation, and MCP servers. Select Refresh Tools after connecting or changing an integration.

Tool availability varies by plan, selected model, feature configuration, and the MCP servers connected to your account. Not every model can use every tool. Adding a tool to an Agent does not override its plan requirement or connection permissions.

Only one image-generation integration can be active on an Agent at a time. MCP tools appear only after their server is configured and can return a tool list.

See Web Search for one platform tool and OpenAI-Compatible API for the separate developer API workflow.

Chat with a saved Agent

Select Chat on an Agent card. A new Agent chat opens with the saved model, instructions, knowledge files, tools, and conversation starters.

The Agent configuration controls what the chat can use, but normal plan limits still apply. If a saved tool or model is no longer available, edit the Agent and choose an available option.

Edit or delete your Agent

Select Edit on one of your cards. The Edit Agent dialog uses the same fields as creation.

  • Select Save Changes to update the Agent.
  • Select Delete to remove it after confirmation.

Changes apply to future Agent requests. They do not rewrite responses already saved in chat history.

Saved Agents and Agent Mode are different

Saved AgentAgent Mode
Where it startsSelect Chat from a card on the Agents page.Select Agent from the mode control in the new-chat composer.
What is savedA reusable configuration with one model, instructions, and optional knowledge files, tools, and conversation starters.A chat mode, not a reusable Agent card.
Model choiceYou choose the model while creating or editing the Agent.Writingmate chooses models while working through the task, so the model selector is hidden.
Best fitRepeated work that needs the same instructions or reference material.A longer, multi-step task that needs planning and tool use during one conversation.

Switching between Agent and the standard Chat or Compare modes after messages have been sent starts a new chat. Read Chat Overview for the current mode controls.
