Supported AI Models

Writingmate supports text, image, and video models from multiple AI providers. The catalog changes as providers release, update, reprice, or retire models, so this page explains how to find the current options instead of maintaining a fixed model list.

Use the AI Models Directory for the current public catalog. Use Model Settings to choose which available models appear in your model selector.

Browse the AI Models Directory

The public AI Models Directory lets you search by model name, provider, or capability. Its category filters include All Models, Text, Image, Video, Multimodal, Coding, and Reasoning. You can also filter by Basic, Pro, or Ultimate model tier.

Select a model card to open its detail page. Model pages show information such as the provider, supported input and output types, context length, capabilities, and tier. Directory entries are for discovery; the models you can select in the app still depend on your plan, workspace settings, and Model Settings choices.

Use the model selector

On the new-chat screen, select the current model name to open the model selector. Use Search models... or switch between these tabs:

• Text lists models that produce text. Select one to use it in the current chat.
• Images lists models that generate images. Some open directly in the image-generation workspace rather than becoming the chat's text model.
• Video lists available video generators. Selecting one opens its video-generation workspace.

The search applies to the active tab. A Pro or Ultimate badge indicates a higher model tier, and a lock means the current plan cannot select that model. Select Upgrade Plan when shown to review eligible plans.

In Compare mode, the text-model selector uses checkboxes and allows up to four models. Image and video generation use their own workflows rather than Compare mode. See Chat Overview for the mode controls.

Model tiers and plan access

Text models are grouped into tiers using their current provider pricing:

A model tier is not the same as a subscription plan name. Tier assignments can change when provider pricing changes. Message allowances also differ by plan and tier, so model access does not mean every model has the same usage limit.

Image and video generation have separate plan availability and usage limits. Check Compare Subscription Plans and Message Limits for the current rules.

Choose which models appear

Select Manage Models at the bottom of the model selector to open Model Settings.

From Model Settings, you can:

• search by model name, slug, or provider
• filter by provider, selection status, and model tier
• review context length and input or output pricing
• select or clear the models that should appear in your selector
• select Save Changes to apply your choices

An unavailable model remains disabled even if you select it in Model Settings. New models may appear automatically when Writingmate marks them as default-visible; you can hide them later.

Workspace owners can also hide the model selector for a workspace. In that case, members use the workspace's configured model behavior and do not see the selector.

Use your own OpenRouter key

BYOK means "bring your own key." Add an OpenRouter API Key under Profile Settings → API Keys to route supported OpenRouter model requests through an OpenRouter account that you manage and pay for separately.

OpenRouter BYOK changes billing and Writingmate usage-limit behavior for supported requests. It does not guarantee access to every model, remove a model's plan lock in the selector, or replace the separate provider and plan requirements for direct image or video integrations.

If a model is missing

1. Search for it in the AI Models Directory to confirm that it is in the current catalog.
2. Open Manage Models and check whether the model is selected.
3. Check its tier and your current plan.
4. Ask a workspace owner whether the model selector is hidden or restricted for the workspace.
5. If the provider recently changed or retired the model, choose an available replacement.
