Tools and Integrations Overview
Writingmate now calls these features tools and integrations. Older documentation may call them plugins.
Chat tools let a supported text model search the web, work in Canvas, or use services connected through MCP. Image and video generation are separate model types in the model selector.
Open the Add content or tools menu
In a signed-in chat, select the + button beside the message box. Its accessible label is Add content or tools.
The menu can include:
- Upload from computer for a local file or image
- Add from knowledge base for a file already saved in Writingmate
- Web search for current information from the internet
- Canvas for creating and revising a document beside the chat
- Integrations for tools supplied by connected MCP servers
The tool section appears only when the selected text model supports tool use. In Compare mode, every selected model must support tools. If only some selected models support tools, choose compatible models before using a tool.
Plan badges appear beside file or tool features that are not included in your current plan.
Web search
Select + → Web search, then send your question. The model can search the internet when it needs current information and include the results in its response.
Web search is included in the current Pro and Ultimate plans. It is available only with text models that support tools.
See Web Search for usage guidance.
Canvas
Select + → Canvas when you want the model to create or revise a longer document. Canvas opens the document beside the conversation, where Writingmate can update the content and suggest changes.
Canvas appears when the selected text model supports Writingmate's document tools. Selecting Canvas enables the related document tools together.
Integrations and MCP
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard that lets an AI model use tools from an outside service. For example, a connected MCP server can provide tools for a database, an automation service, or another business app.
To connect or manage a server:
- Open + → Integrations.
- Select Connect Integrations or Configure Integrations.
- Add or authenticate the server in Profile Settings → MCP Integration.
- Return to the chat and open Integrations again.
- Select the whole server or choose individual tools from its submenu.
The Integrations submenu says No integrations configured until at least one MCP server is connected. MCP tools also require a text model that supports tools.
See MCP Integration for setup instructions.
Generate images
Image generation is no longer activated as a chat plugin.
- Open the model selector beside the message box.
- Select the Images tab.
- Choose an image model or image-generation page.
- Enter your prompt and generate the image.
Image availability depends on your plan. The available model list can change as providers and models are updated.
See AI Image Generation for image workflows and editing options.
Generate videos
Video generation also uses the model selector instead of the Add content or tools menu.
- Open the model selector.
- Select the Video tab.
- Choose a video model. Writingmate opens its video-generation page.
- Set the prompt and available options, then create the video.
Video model access and monthly generation limits depend on your plan.
See AI Video Generation for the current workflow.
Check model and plan support
Tool support and plan access are separate checks:
- A plan can include a tool, but the selected text model must also support tool use.
- Image and video models have their own plan access and usage limits.
- Model availability can change when Writingmate adds or updates providers.
Use the model selector to see which models are available to your account. See Supported AI Models, Compare Subscription Plans, and Message Limits for current access and allowance rules.
