Sticker price is the wrong way to shop for an AI video generator. What shows up is how many times you had to regenerate a clip before it was usable, because that's the number that quietly multiplies your real cost by two, three, or five.

Each brief went into all four tools with the same written prompt (adjusted only for each platform's required syntax) and, where the model supported it, the same reference image for character or product consistency. I counted every generation — including throwaways — until I had a clip I'd actually hand to a client, then divided total spend by that number to get a real cost per usable clip, not a theoretical cost per second.
That "regenerate until usable" number is the part every per-second pricing page hides, and it's the single biggest driver of your actual bill.
Runway Gen-4: Best for Multi-Shot Consistency, Slowest to Get There on Motion
Runway's Gen-4 and Gen-4.5 models are built around References — you upload up to three reference images and the model anchors character, object, or location identity to them instead of re-imagining the scene from scratch on every generation. That's exactly what the character-consistency brief needed, and it showed. The red jacket and the actor's face held up across all three shots in Director Mode without me touching a fine-tune.
Where Gen-4 struggled was the social ad cut. Fast product motion — liquid pouring, quick cuts — needed three attempts before the pour looked physically right instead of slightly gelatinous. On the credit-heavy Gen-4.5 tier that adds up fast: it runs about 12 credits per second at 1080p, so a 15-second clip that took three passes cost roughly 540 credits before I had something postable.

Kling 2.5 Turbo: Cheapest Per Second, But Watch the Plan Math
Kling 2.5 Turbo currently tops the Artificial Analysis video arena leaderboard for both text-to-video and image-to-video, and it's the only model in this test that nailed the product demo brief on the first generation — the push-in camera move and studio lighting looked right immediately. At 25 credits for a 5-second 1080p clip (down 30% from Kling 2.1's 35-credit cost), it's genuinely the cheapest model here per second of finished footage.
The catch is the subscription math, not the per-clip math. The $6.99 Standard plan burns through its credit allotment fast if you're iterating on anything beyond a couple of clips a week, and Kling's face-lock character reference feature — while solid — occasionally drifted on lighting between shots in the café scene, costing me a second generation on shot three.

Luma Ray3: Best HDR Output, Worst Fit for Fast Iteration
Ray3 is the odd one out in this group because it's built for a different job — compositing and post-production, not fast social turnaround. It's the only model here that outputs native 16-bit HDR with ACES EXR support, which matters a lot if your product demo clip is headed into a real edit timeline next to camera footage rather than straight to Instagram.
That quality comes at a real cost, and not just in dollars. HDR output runs at 2x the base API cost, and HDR plus EXR runs at 3x. On the Plus plan ($30/mo), I hit that ceiling fast when I needed a second pass on the café scene's lighting consistency. That alone offset some of the higher per-second cost, since I wasn't paying for or waiting on a separate sound tool.
On raw single-shot realism and prompt adherence, Veo 3 was the most consistent model in the test — it rarely needed a second attempt on any single 8-second shot. Where the cost adds up is volume: at up to $0.40/sec on the Quality tier (or $0.15/sec on Fast), a 15-second ad cut with sound runs $2.25 to $6, and that's before any regenerations. The AI Pro plan's ~1,000 monthly credits cover about 10 Quality-tier videos before you're either downgrading to Fast or paying for AI Ultra at $249.99/mo.

Runway and Veo cost more per clip but need fewer regenerations for their respective strong suits — character consistency and single-shot audio-synced realism. Luma only makes financial sense once HDR/EXR output is actually part of your deliverable, not a nice-to-have.

What I'd actually do — and what I ended up doing for this test — is stop trying to pick a favorite and instead match the brief to the model, which is a lot less painful when they're all sitting behind one login instead of four.
